Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won the Oscar Award 2016 for a short documentary film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, which is about honour killings in Pakistan. It was her second nomination and also her second Oscar Award win after she won for her short film Saving Face in 2012.

Cinema crises continued..


The Sindh province had 204 cinemas but only 75 of them have survived in 2005. Karachi had 120 cinemas but now there are only 34 cinemas left. In Hyderabad only six out of 21 cinemas are running. In Lahore, Naghma cinema on Abbot Road is closed after other main theatres on McLeod Road like Ritz, Mubarak, Rattan, Regent, Palace and Mehfil cinemas were closed due to film crises. Also Karachi's Lyric and Alif Laila, Hydrabad's Rahat and five cinemas (incl. Firdous cinema) in MirPur Khas were closed in this year.
