Punjab is known for its beautiful and lustrous folk love stories
like Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal, Mirza Sahiban and after that a
true love reached its peak of success in the 20th century that
was of Balo (Iqbal Begum) and Mahia (Mohammad Ali).
Their
only daughter Mukhtar Begum filmi name Sabiha Khanum proved her to be one of
the most successful model of fame in Pakistan film industry. She is the senior
most film actress and history of Pakistani films would be incomplete without
here.
The famous stage drama writer, poet Nafees Khalili introduced
her in his stage drama But Shikkan. She worked with name
Sabiha. He also introduced her to famous film director Masood Pervaiz
who introduced her in "Beli" with Santosh Kumar
as hero and Shaheena as a heroine in other cast. Her first film which gave
her success was Director Anwar Kemal Pasha's Do Aansoo in which she
played a lead role against Santosh Kumar. Do Aansoo was the first
ever silver jubilee hit Urdu movie in Pakistan.
Most of the people thought that she would not be appropriate
for Punjabi films and people opted for Musarrat Nazir depicting a complete Mutiar of
Punjab in Kurta and Lacha, but Director M. S. Dar's super hit
film Dulla Bhatti proved
Sabiha Khanum as a versatile and forced people to change their view that
Sabiha cannot do justice to portray Punjabi culture roles. Though Sabiha
played against Sudhir in
many films but enjoyed more success with Santosh Kumar.
They both gave many super hit films. Both fell in love with eachother during
the shooting of super hit film Waada.
Sabiha played a lead role as a first heroin in many films in
the 50s and 60s. People can never forget her roles in Hassan Tariq's Tehzeeb and then "Ik
Gunah Aur Sahi".
She played in many of TV plays. These days she is in America
with her son. We wish her long life and hope to see her on screen
soon.
In very early of 50's, Sabiha wanted to get an enrollment in
school "Madarsatul
Banat" in Lahore for study purpose, but she could not get admission being
an actress at that time. School management refused to take her in their
school taking plea that presence of an actress in school will give a
bad impression to the other students.
